The family history of Jesus—quite the colorful group of people. As you read through the list you see some who faithfully followed God; some who had some major mess ups; and some who deliberately did not follow God's ways. The ancestry of Christ fulfills Old Testament prophecy and the birth of Christ fulfilled Old Testament prophecy. Isaiah 7:14 - "The LORD himself will give you a sign: the virgin will be pregnant. She will have a son, and she will name him Immanuel." Matthew 1:22–23 - "All this happened to bring about what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'The virgin will be pregnant. She will have a son, and they will name him Immanuel,' which means, "God with us."
"God is with us." No more temple. No more priests. No more separation. God with us!! What an amazing gift. God in flesh. Fully man and and fully God. What love, what amazing love! Oh, how I am looking forward to reading and hearing the words of Jesus/God himself. Jesus—THE Christ of God.
A little about Matthew. Matthew was a Jew who was a tax-collector for the Romans who were oppressing the Jews. Obviously not a well-liked guy. He was taking money from his own people to give to Rome. He took advantage of people for his own gain, and this was who Jesus chose to call. Matthew chose to follow, and he spent the rest of his life telling other people about the King—Jesus, THE Christ.
Jesus spent his life living and dying for people like Matthew. Matthew chose to follow. We each have a choice to make. Follow and obey—or—turn away.
