Jeremiah complains. Why? Why is it? Why is it that evil people seem to get by with what they are doing? They speak well of you (God) with their mouths but their heart and actions are far from you God. Why is it? Why is it they seem to prosper, be successful, and have easy lives? You know me LORD. You have tested my thoughts and know my heart. They don't even think they will have to answer to a higher power. They even think, "God does not see what happens to us."
I love it that God's Word is about real "human" people and emotions. Nothing has been sugar-coated or whitewashed. We complain about the same things Jeremiah complained about. But God says, Umm... Jeremiah? Yes God? I have things under control. I know. Hang in there. Keep the faith. Keep the courage. I'll protect you. Your own family members are plotting and making plans against you. "Don't trust them... even if they say nice things to you." The key words in Jeremiah's complaint are "seem" and "think." The reality is Jeremiah have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. Things can "appear" to be one way and actually be another.
The Israelites had become arrogant. They had convinced themselves God didn't know what they were doing. (Verse 4) Just because it "seems" they are getting by with their actions doesn't mean they truly are. Just because they "think" they don't have to answer to a higher power doesn't mean that is true. Just because they "think" they have a successful plan in place to destroy Jeremiah (Jeremiah 11:18; 12:6) doesn't mean they will be allowed to carry it out to fruition. God knows. Accountability happens on God's timetable. God warned Jeremiah and HE protected him from their evil intents.
