The Pharisees and Sadducees go to Jesus and ask for a sign. They were not going to him with a seeking sincere heart in order to learn from Him. They were instead trying to trick Him. Jesus of course understood this and did not give them the "miracle from God" they asked for. They had already witnessed many of His miracles which were done in their presence. He instead spoke truth to them. (Hmm... I'm suspecting the truth sounded like a "zinger" to them. Whenever we tried to speak truth to my sister and brother-in-law they accused me of sending them "zingers.")
Jesus said to them—You know how to discern what the weather will be by looking at the sky, but you see what I am doing and you don't "get it" at all.
Matthew 16:4 - "Evil and sinful people ask for a miracle as a sign," but no sign will be given. You have seen enough to know truth. You have heard enough to know truth. You know about the sign of Jonah—but that wasn't enough. Soon there will be the sign of my death and resurrection—but that won't be enough either.
They were religious unbelievers. They didn't want to know truth. Jesus warned his disciples to stay away from that kind of thinking and teaching. Like yeast, if wrong teaching isn't guarded against it can insidiously creep in and take over. "Be careful! Beware of the yeast (teaching) of the Pharisees and Sadducees." (Mathew 16:6) Beware! They may look like sheep but they are wolves. They may appear to be believers, but they are religious unbelievers. Beware! Their actions will reveal truth.
