Matthew 18:15 – 19:30 (Continued)

June 08, 2012

The people continued to gather and Jesus continued to heal. And the Pharisees (the religious unbelievers), continued to try and trick Jesus asking Him if it was okay for a man to divorce his wife for any reason he chooses. I love how Jesus responds by pointing out to them their own claims. "Surely you have read in the Scriptures... A man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife and the two will become one body," (quoting from Genesis 2:24). "So there are not two, but one.  God has joined the two together, so no one should separate them."

God joined together. Marriage vows before God. To divorce is to also break a vow with God. You are defying God and scrambling eggs that cannot be unscrambled. Our hearts need to be right before marriage. We need to make sure our lives are surrendered to God's will and not following our own selfish desires. It is not the will of God for a believer to marry an unbeliever. Can God later bless that marriage? Sure. Can God forgive failures? Sure. But God perfect will has been lost, and there will be consequences. I like the description of the triangle.

The closer each becomes to God the closer they each become to each other. Marriage is God's plan. Do it His way!!

Addendum:  Yesterday (12/17/15) was our 43rd anniversary. I'm so thankful we chose to do marriage God's way.
