Matthew 27:1–66

July 02, 2012

The leading priests and older leaders decided that Jesus should die. Jewish laws prohibited them from executing anyone, so since they didn't want to break their Jewish laws, they tied Jesus up and took him to the Roman governor who wasn't bound by their laws.

Now, how does that make any sense? They "acted" self-righteous and obedient to the laws (following the letter of the law), while blatantly breaking the spirit of the law. Amazing how people rationalize doing wrong by "doing right." Did they really feel they weren't accountable for His death just because they had someone else do their dirty work for them? Seriously? The very people who should have recognized He was THE Christ—totally missed it. But, maybe they didn't miss it. Maybe they just refused to accept Him as the Christ.

There was one reason why they wanted Jesus dead—envy. Pilate understood this and he proved it by offering to either release Barabbas, the worst of the worst who was known to be very bad—or Jesus. The reason they wanted Jesus dead had to be envy and jealousy. That is the only thing that can explain why they would choose to protect a violent proven criminal over Jesus. They were out to get Jesus, no matter what.

Pilate, realizing Jesus was innocent, washed his hands of the guilt by saying, "You are the ones who are causing it!" And the people who were so determined to see Jesus destroyed said, "We and our children will be responsible for his death." (Matthew 27:25) Incredible. Not only were they willing to march down the wrong path and risk the consequences for themselves, but they were also willing to risk their children and future generations. Envy and jealousy are ugly companions.
