The Cup. The "Inconvenient Truth" as our Pastor calls it. The cup of God's wrath. Several years ago when I was reading this passage, Verse 8 just really jumped out at me. Then I started to pay attention to all the other verses in the Bible that refers to "the cup" as well.
Psalm 75:8 - "The LORD holds a cup of anger in his hand; it is full of wine mixed with spices. He pours it out even to the last drop, and the wicked drink it all."
Jeremiah 25:15 - "My anger is like the wine in a cup... drink all of my anger from this cup."
Revelation 14:9,10 - "..that one also will drink the wine of God's anger which is prepared with all its strength in the cup of his anger."
Revelation 16:19 - "...so he gave... the cup filled with the wine of his terrible anger."
I guess one of the things that struck me the most was that the cup of God's anger was wine mixed with spices. Wine—not something unpleasant, but something pleasing. I believe that while the wicked are drinking the cup of God's anger they may not initially even realize that it is in fact the cup of God's anger that they are drinking, and that they will be forced to drink the entire cup."
Additional references:
Isaiah 51:23
Luke 22:43-43
Ezekiel 23:32
Next Entry: Psalm 75:1 – 76:12 (Continued)
