IF—THEN. IF—we understand the holiness of the LORD, (It says, "I am the LORD" 25 times in these chapters) and obey his commands, THEN—we will live; He will give us the land; and He will set us apart to be his own.
His commands are simple. We must be holy; respect our parents; remember the Sabbath; do not have any other gods or worship idols; we are not to be stingy and hoard "our" crops (what we have); and we must not steal, cheat, lie, or make false promises. We are to respect God and forget about the wrongs (real or perceived) done to us by others. We are not to try and get even. We are to love our neighbors as ourselves. We are to remember His laws and rules AND obey them.
IF—THEN. IF—we don't obey His rules; if we try to get by with things thinking no one will know (Leviticus 19:14 - cursing a deaf person or tripping the blind); if we aren't fair; hate people in our hearts; try to live on both sides of the fence, saying one thing and acting another (Leviticus 19:14 - mixing animal, seeds, or cloth); if we try to cheat people using dishonest weights or measures (Leviticus 19:36 - altering the size of the baskets and jars but making them appear to be correct); THEN—we will have consequences. We will be thrown out of the land, we will experience God's anger, and there will be punishment. "They have brought (their own death) it on themselves." God says that six different times in Chapter 20.
Wow. "They have brought it on themselves." We each have a choice. Obedience—receive God's blessings. Disobedience—receive God's punishment. Blessings—or—Punishment. It truly is our choice.
We choose to believe AND obey. IF—THEN.
