Leviticus 23:1 – 25:55 (Continued)

February 27, 2010

Jubilee—A special holy time. A time of freedom, release of debt, a time to return to your own property.  Every seven years was a year of rest.  The 50th year (seven years times seven) was a time of celebration. It was Jubilee.

God stresses you must not cheat each other. "... but you must respect God. I am the LORD your God." IF—God is saying that we should not cheat others and by not cheating others it is showing respect to Him, THEN—the opposite would also be true. IF—we cheat others, THEN—we are showing disrespect to God. Disrespect to God ... what a sobering thought.

Leviticus 25:20–22 - God also stresses not to have fear. They were not to be concerned about what they were to eat or how they were going to survive on that seventh year when they could not plant. God promised to bless them so much on the sixth year that they would have plenty for the next three years. We have witnessed the fulfillment of this truth with our own eyes.

God stresses that the land belongs to Him. We are only passing through. This is not our home. Why have the desire to control, grab all you can get, seize power, or manipulate others so you can elevate yourself when we are just passing through? It isn't yours!! It is ALL God's! This (earth) is not our home! Our goal should not be for earthly power or things.

God then stresses how you should treat the poor. You should not be trying to profit off of them by charging them interest or overcharging them. God goes on to say you must not rule over them cruelly. You should not be taking advantage of others by using knowledge or information you have over them. Both times scripture says (again), "Respect your God"; "I am the LORD."

God makes the point over and over of the direct relationship between how we treat others and how that relates to our respect for Him. If it's a big deal to God then it should be a big deal to us. Treat others fairly!!
