Psalm 8
The Lord's Greatness
The Lord's Greatness
O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is YOUR name in all the earth. You have set YOUR glory above the heavens. From the lips of children and infants YOU have ordained praise because of YOUR enemies, to silence the foe and avenger. When I consider YOUR heavens, the work of YOUR fingers, the moon and the stars which YOU have set in place, what is man that YOU are mindful of him, the son of man that YOU care for him? YOU made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.YOU made him ruler over the works of YOUR hands; YOU put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the seas, all that swim in the paths of the sea.O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is YOUR name in all the earth.
A little late, but we now have Psalm 8 memorized along with Psalm 150, Psalm 140 and Psalm 1. Thank you again, LORD, for Jane. (Her Name Was Jane)
Addendum: 1/5/15 ~ When I first began to read and memorize Psalm 8 there was one sentence I just couldn't understand. What did, "from the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger" mean? It just didn't make sense to me. Why was praise ordained (or established and taught from the very beginning) because of His enemies? And, what did that have to do with silencing the foe and avenger?
I've learned over the years to literally ask Him what He means. So, I asked. What does this mean, LORD? I don't get it. It doesn't make sense to me. Then I remembered the most important thing Jane taught us—PRAISE. And then it all made sense. When you PRAISE Him it doesn't matter if you have enemies because PRAISE silences the foes and the avengers. It doesn't stop the foe and avenger from what they are doing, BUT it does silence them by providing a protective shield from their words and actions. Like the water shedding off a duck's back, the harmful intentions of others cannot penetrate our minds, bodies, emotions, spirits, or souls. God ordained PRAISE as our shield.
Ephesians 6:16 - "...take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one."
When you PRAISE the Lord you are confessing and expressing your faith in HIM, and your faith IN HIM is a shield that silences (and therefore extinguishes) anything an enemy may throw at you.
Zechariah 2:8 says, "... for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye."
Our foes are in reality—HIS foes. The person who seeks to avenge is attempting to usurp the LORD's authority. This is why the battles we face are NOT our battles and why the "battle belongs to the LORD." HE knows. HE is aware. HE is watching. HE will avenge. HE will bring about accountability.
PRAISE is our expression of faith to God; PRAISE is our protective shield provided by God. "O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is YOUR name in all earth."
I now quote Psalm 8 multiple times a day/night. It's become part of my DNA. When I wake up at night—Psalm 8. Driving in the car—Psalm 8. In the shower—Psalm 8. It literally is at the forefront of my mind at all times. It's ALL about YOU, Lord. It's ALL about YOU. YOU alone are great. YOU have the power to save. The battle belongs to YOU. Blessed be YOUR name.
