Psalm 8 - I've missed something all these years.
I met Jane E. Wolfe (Her Name Was Jane) on January 5, 2007. After enjoying a long and comfortable conversation (the first and last time we ever had a conversation), Jane prayed the most amazing Prayer of Blessing over my life. Every Monday morning from that time on, I drove to the nursing home to visit Jane. She didn't remember me or anything about my first visit, but I went anyways. I would spend my time reading to her from one of her Bibles or carrying on an one-sided conversation. I no longer remember the exact date, but just shortly after I started my weekly visits, Jane asked me to read Psalm 8.
What I've missed all these years is—Psalm 8. How did I miss this?
2007
January 5th: Prayer of blessing
January: Psalm 8 - Purpose: It's ALL about Him, His Power, and His Greatness
July: Psalm 150 - Praise
July: Psalm 140 - Protection
September: Isaiah 30 - Provision
2008
January: Psalm 1 - Path - It's our choice, blessings or destruction.
April: Jeremiah 33 - Promise
Prayer of Blessing → Purpose → Praise → Protection → Provision → Path → Promise
Addendum: 1/5/15 ~ The chapters I've listed here are the only scriptures Jane ever asked me to read. It isn't that Jane spoke often or I decided to pick and choose which chapters I felt were relevant or wanted to claim as God's promises. These are the only ones. When Jane asked me to read Psalm 8 and then repeated, "What is man...," it was very early on in my visits and I didn't think anything of it. Jane had spoken words of comfort to me and prayed a Prayer of Blessing over my life during our first encounter on January 5, '07, but at that time I had no idea God was going to continue to use Jane to speak HIS words to me at pivotal times. I didn't know the plans God had for Jane or for me. I just thought I was visiting an elderly lady who was all alone in a nursing home.
While the scriptures Jane told me to read brought much comfort and guidance to our lives, Psalm 140, Isaiah 30, and Psalm 1 also clearly define what happens to those who refuse to surrender their wills to God. There is a choice to make. There is a path to follow. We either choose to follow HIS footsteps on HIS path—which results in HIS blessings; or, we choose to make and follow our own path—which ultimately leads to destruction. Choosing to make and follow our own paths will never fill the God-given void within each of us or provide the peace and stability we all desire. What we think will bring us happiness comes with a very high cost because we miss out on HIS earthly and eternal blessings.
