Proverbs 1:1–33

June 14, 2011

Knowledge begins with fear (respect) for the LORD, but those who are morally deficient (fools), despise (hate) wisdom and self control (discipline).

Proverbs. Wise words that teach wisdom, insight, what is right, just, and fair. The proverbs give us common sense advice, teaches good judgment, gives caution, offers guidance, and details the importance of understanding. But, it's all just words—just sayings—if we don't have fear (respect) for the LORD. The only proof of our fear (respect) is our total surrender to Him. It's not the deeds that we may or may not do.

You can be a "good" person without being a surrendered follower of the LORD.

Solomon starts by warning about evil. He talks about the importance of submitting to our parents; the first step in learning to submit to authority. He talks about people who plot and plan to take from others what they want. I have a friend who calls it trying to live the high life by taking the low road. Greed—wanting what others have and doing whatever is necessary to get it. But! They will fall into their own traps, and they will only catch themselves. "All greedy people end up this way; greed kills selfish people." The NIV says it this way: "Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it."

Then wisdom speaks. You fools and morally deficient. When are you going to get it? If only you had listened. I called, but you refused to listen. I held out my hand, but you paid no attention. I gave advice, but you did not listen. I corrected you, but you still didn't listen. You had opportunities, but now it is too late. WHEN (not if) you are in trouble I (wisdom) will laugh.

Proverbs 1:27 - "When disaster comes over you like a storm, when trouble strikes you like a whirlwind, when pain and trouble overwhelm you." (Not if—WHEN.)

THEN—
You will call to me, but I will not answer.
You will look for me, but you will not find me.

BECAUSE—
You rejected knowledge.
You chose to not respect the LORD.
You did not accept advice.
You rejected my correction.

SO—
You will get what you deserve.
You will get what you planned for others.
Fools/morally deficient will die because they refuse to listen.
They will be destroyed because they do not care.

The NIV says they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

Wow. Strong words! When we refuse to listen to Wisdom and to what God is saying to us, there will come a time when Wisdom/God will not hear and will not answer. The exact opposite of Jeremiah 29:12–14. I never want to live my life in that place. I choose to listen. I choose to be obedient.

Proverbs 1:33 - "But those who listen to me will live in safety and be at peace, without fear of injury."
