Proverbs 18

July 2, 2011

I'm a little over halfway through Proverbs. 31 chapters in all, one for each day of the month. Page after page of reading over and over about the contrasts between the actions of (and the consequences for) people who do what the LORD says—verses—people who don't.

"The words of fools (someone arrogant and self-sufficient; who orders his life as if there is not God) will ruin them; their own words will trap them." (Verse 7)

"Proud people will be ruined, but the humble will be honored." (Verse 12)

"The LORD is like a strong tower; those who do right can run to him for safety." (Verse 10)

American culture says: Be your own boss; you can have financial freedom; it's up to you; you are in control; it's all about you! All statements permeated with lies. It is up to you who you are going to serve—God—or yourself. You can't serve both. If you try to do both the decision is made and you are serving yourself.

Proverbs 18:11 - "Rich people trust their wealth to protect them. They think it is like the high walls of a city." The NIV says they imagine it is an unscalable wall. Instead of running to the LORD (who is a strong tower) for safety, they depend on themselves, thinking and imagining they are safe.

Scofield has Proverbs divided into six sections in Jane's (Her Name Was Jane) KJV Bible:

1) Instruction and exhortation to sons
       Chapters 1-7
2) In praise of wisdom
       Chapter 8-9
3) The folly of wickedness; the wisdom of righteousness
Chapter 10-19 (He also calls this the contrast between goodness and evil.)
4) Warnings and Instructions
       Chapter 20-29
5) The words of Agur
       Chapter 30
6) The words of King Lemuel
