Genesis 27:1 – 28:9

December 17, 2009

This part of scripture is very disturbing to read. There are so many blatant lies and so much deceit.

Geneses 27:2–4 - There are 8 references to I (or me) referring to Isaac in these verses. I can't help but wonder if things would have turned out differently if Isaac wasn't so focused on himself. Why not just bless Esau? Why send Esau away so he could get Isaac what Isaac wanted before he would bless him? Yet, I understand that it was God's will for Jacob to receive the blessing.

Genesis 25:23 - God told Rebekah the older would serve the younger. But, it could not have been God's will for it to be accomplished through deceit. God did not intend for Rebekah to devise her own plans to accomplish His will. I wonder how it would have happened if she had taken her hands off and allowed God to fulfill His will in His way. What a contrast of terms. Allow—God. Is he God or not? Jacob certainly faced many consequences for the choices he made.

When God disciplines it is often to try and save us from eternal harm and to bring us back into fellowship with Him. When man disciplines it is often out of anger and revenge. God's discipline is out of love and righteous anger. He pursues us. He wants us. He loves us. Every knee will bow. He wants us to choose to bow our knee in surrender.

Jeremiah 46:28 - "I will punish you fairly, but I will not let you escape your punishment."

Addendum:  9/3/13 ~ See the Addendum for Genesis 47:28 – 48:22 to see how easily God could have made sure the blessing was given to the son God wanted it to go to.
