Genesis 37:1–36

December 30, 2009

Well ... today I saw there was just one chapter to read and I thought, "Awesome.  I can handle that." God had just released me from the many days I spent reading, writing, and absorbing Genesis 31–33 and how it related to our "storm" situation.

The story of Joseph. Loved by his father; given a glimpse of his future through dreams he did not understand; hated by his brothers; victim to their plotting; stripped of his belongings; thrown in a pit while his brothers sat down to eat; and then sold to enemies—the ultimate betrayal. His brothers strategized over what to tell their father and they came up with a covert plan. They dipped Joseph's coat into blood so it would appear as if Joseph had died. They don't "say" Joseph was killed by an animal, but in their deceit they let Jacob assume Joseph was dead because of his blood stained coat.

Setting up a false situation and letting an innocent person believe the false situation is the same as a blatant and outright lie.

I read the accompanying Life Lesson and then looked to see what verses were in the Exploration Verses section. Verses? Verses?!? NO! Chapters!! Sixteen chapters. I am like—WHAT?!? Sixteen chapters? What is this? I have things I need to get done today. Sixteen chapters? My husband was in the kitchen below our loft. I called down to him. "Honey, listen to this. The Exploration section is sending me to read sixteen chapters!" Esther 4–8; Job 1–3; Jonah 1–4; Philippians 1; Hebrews 11–12.

I started to read them thinking I would read a few now and some more later. Wrong!  With goose bumps and tears I realize God is trying to tell me something—and I was complaining.
