Genesis 42:1 – 43:34

January 05, 2010

Years!  For years Joseph waited, but it wasn't years of waiting for revenge. He lived, he worked, he was in prison, he was released and put into leadership, he married and had children and through it all, whether good or bad, he recognized who God was—GOD—and Joseph remained faithful to Him.

Joseph had dreams as a boy. Dreams he was ridiculed for and eventually thrown in a dungeon for.

Then 13 years later...

Genesis 42:9 - "Joseph remembered his dreams about his brothers bowing down to him."

Joseph was faithful and it took thirteen years, but God showed him what he meant by the dream. I think this must have been an incredible "aha" moment. God, is this what those dreams meant? You mean you have been preparing me for this all this time? All those years in prison? It was part of your plan to save my family? I think Joseph's heart would have burst out in praise when he realized all that had happened to him was part of God's plan.

Genesis 42:18 - Joseph lets his brothers know that he is a God-fearing man. Yesterday I wrote how the scripture doesn't say much about how Joseph felt, instead focusing on his faithfulness. BUT then we come to verse 21 and it reveals so much. The brothers admit that Joseph begged them to save him but they refused to listen. And what did they actually do? Genesis 37:23 - they sat down to eat. Sat down to eat!! While their brother was crying out for help, they sat down to eat. Incredible. Joseph had every reason to be full of anger and revenge, but instead his focus was on God and not on himself. Now he has his brothers in front of him. He has the perfect opportunity to get revenge, and what does he do? He talks to them about God. He tests them to make sure they aren't the same as before, but he does not seek revenge.

Genesis 43:6 - Jacob was still willing to deceive
Genesis 43:14 - Jacob finally surrenders all.

God's word always comes true. There is not a single promise given by God in the scriptures that did not happen. We believe the promises He has given to us. Psalm 140 - "The Lord upholds the cause of the needy." See: (Her Name Was Jane).
